Navigating the City

Recommendation: We strongly recommend using Google Maps for navigating the city's complex transit network. It is accurate and provides real-time information, including estimated time of arrival (ETA) and service disruptions or delays. It is the most reliable tool for checking which train to take and which exit to use when leaving large stations. As an additional tool, the official app from the metropolitan transport authority (MTA) is also available.

The MTA and OMNY System

As of 2026, New York City has fully transitioned to the (https://omny.info) contactless payment system. You no longer need a physical MetroCard. You can simply "tap and go" at any subway turnstile or bus using your contactless credit/debit card, smartphone (Apple Pay, Google Pay), or wearable device.

·         Standard Fare: $3.00 for a single subway or local bus ride.

·         Fare Capping: If you use the same payment method for 12 rides within a 7-day period, all subsequent rides for the rest of that week are free (capped at $35.00).

·         Transfers: Transfers between subways and buses are free for two hours after your initial tap.
